5 Signs that You Need Root Canal Treatment

root canal cambridge

The problem is that not everyone notices that they have a problem with their teeth right away. Without getting regular dental care, it can be hard for problems to be discovered early before they get more costly and painful. At some point, you may end up with a root canal. It is important that if you suspect that you need a root canal that you get treatment right away as this can lead to more serious problems later on. Here are 5 signs that you need a root canal treatment.

  1. Painful Tooth

A painful tooth on its own may not be a warning sign as there are a variety of reasons for this. However, a tooth that needs a root canal will be extra sensitive. If you do not see a sign of cavity on that tooth, there could be internal problems that can be very serious. If this decay gets to the root of the tooth, you are going to feel this in the nerves of your teeth, causing sleepless nights. If this happens to you, you should contact a dentist right away.

  1. An Abscess

Sometimes you may notice a puss-filled sac on the gums by your tooth. If you notice this, this means that there is a root canal infection that really needs to get taken care of right away. This may or may not be painful or even noticeable, so you absolutely need to go to the dentist right away. If you let this infection spread, you could not only need a root canal but you could also need surgeries like one grafting or flap surgery.

  1. Red and Swollen Gums

Anytime you suffer from red and swollen gums, this is a sign of periodontal disease. This is also a big sign that you may need a root canal. The difference is that when you need a root canal, the red and swollen gums will only appear around the tooth that needs to be looked at whereas with periodontal disease they will be around all of the teeth.

  1. The X-Ray

When you get an x-ray, this will give definitive proof that you need to get a root canal. The x-ray gives the dentist a clear view of any infection in the tooth especially one at the root of the tooth. It can also show the dentist just how severe this problem is and where it is located so that they can come up with an attack plan that will best meet your needs.

  1. A Dark Tooth

It is common for your tooth to become discolored and start to turn a shade of yellow. However if you notice that one of your teeth is turning a shade of gray, this is often a sign that you need a root canal. This is a stain that cannot be fixed through whitening treatments. If you notice this, you could have an infection growing inside of your tooth.

It is important that if you notice any of these problems that you turn to a dentist right away.
